The Creative Destruction of the Autonomous Automobile: 3 Industries that Will Never Be the Same

“Things will never be the same again.” As overused and trite as this phrase has become, we are still very much in and on an accelerating technology curve that assures the phrase won’t go out of style anytime too soon. Whether the Ray Kurzweil predicted singularity is our fate, or if his futurist vision for the human-robot symbiosis falls a tad short, the current technology landscape and the pace of new innovation continues to accelerate. Disruption is the new normal in technology and the Black Swan-like event has become the expected, even the oxymoronic mundane. One such innovation that has been making plenty of headlines since 2010 is that of the autonomous automobile aka the self-driving car. As important and beneficial as such an innovation clearly will be for someone with that specific handicap, the self-driving car will also bring with it an incredible wave of creative destruction. Creative destruction occurs when a new entity, service, or product enters the market rendering an old offering obsolete, which in turn forces the “owner” of the “old” offering to innovate, re-invent themselves or face business extinction. On top of that, brand new markets and never before thought of (or even necessary) offerings tend to emerge rapidly in such an environment. Here are 3 centenarian industries that are about to be “run over” by the self-driving car and will need to veer swiftly in order to keep on truckin’.

Transportation and the Labor that Drives It

If I were a trucker, a cabbie, a bus driver – anyone that operates a vehicle for service purposes –  and had children, I would be doing all I could to steer my kids away from following in my footsteps. This is no knock on their profession, we all know that truckers move the goods and food we consume, but the labor that powers the ground transportation industry is facing a dramatic shift as the self-driving car makes its way into our society and the creative destruction is already underway. SARTRE or Safe Road Trains for the Environment – a European Union funded project in partnership with Volvo – is already live testing road-trains that allow commuters to enter and exit the ‘grouping’ and then kick back, relax, and let the automated driving commence.

Yes, currently there is a human “lead” driver, a professional driver who operates the lead vehicle in the gaggle, but it is easy to envision even that lead person being replaced by what is essentially, a more perfect set of digital algorithms. And if cars can maneuver in and out of a road-train, then why can’t 6 or 7 or 12 tractor trailers leave a singular destination in a road-train fashion with only a singular human operator? The answer, is of course they can, and they are of course already testing that as well. This doesn’t just affect truckers and the trucking industry. If I’m the train, busing, airline, or personal transportation industry, or the tangential industries that provide services and products to them, I am looking for new ways to create value, and I am starting yesterday. 

The Auto Industry Itself

Zipcar, you’ve seen it on the highways and perhaps you are a member of their “wheels when you want them” platform. So what of the idea of Zipcar carpools that pick you up and drop you off at your home via a self-driving car? Think about this for just a moment. Let’s assume a carpool can comfortably fit 4 adults. Sure you might still own 1 vehicle, but the absolute need to own a 2nd vehicle – if say you have a family – is much less an actual need as it is today. Some would opt out of owning a 2nd vehicle for eco-concerns, some would do it simply to save and invest more money. The reason really wouldn’t matter as so much the fact that this new market would offer this very attractive alternative to 2nd vehicle ownership.
It’s easy to realize that the disruption of the auto-industry doesn’t stop with this one potential example above. Now – in this potential near-future – the very ergonomic design and function of automobiles will change overnight. The auto itself would have to make the Titanic shift from being a performance vehicle over to a services platform that happens to be physically mobile. The perception of wasted time aka windshield time stuck in traffic and commuting in general is eradicated if the vehicle is re-designed from within to make your transportation time highly valuable and productive. It doesn’t take a genius to begin to re-envision how the auto will be transformed into an extension of the office and lifestyle. What will be fun to watch – and where the automobile industry can capitalize – is the innovations that will be born that cater to this neo-commuter and the applications they access to capitalize on this new found “time”. Will it all happen from an iPad regardless or will it be something more native to the physical auto? – that remains to be seen.
This potentially means far fewer cars on the road, far fewer cars being demanded by the market, and a much greater attention paid to specific functionalities an auto offers and the competitive advantages it renders that brand. The car itself becomes more and more part of the services economy, and that is a shift that will cause disruption, creative destruction, and amazing new innovations. 

The Auto Insurance Industry – Are You in Good Hands… with Google?

There’s not much to say here beyond the title of this section. If 50%, 75%, and eventually 100% of the driving you are doing is happening via a self-driving car, what happens to the entire industry that is auto insurance? Might you still carry some catastrophic coverage? Perhaps, but what if you don’t own the car and you use a Zipcar like service, and that service enters select road-trains as needed, all while you are happily typing away on your iPad on your way to work or to the supermarket? The entire idea of how you pay for insurance and when completely shifts. There is no doubt that a portion of any airline ticket you purchase is utilized to cover various insurances that carrier must comply with… so, does the self-driving car then shift to a per transaction or subscription based model where the cost of insurance is baked into the pricing? And let’s not forget, at least in theory, accidents would be dramatically reduced, and potentially approaching zero. This industry is facing a prime example of creative destruction and it will be the most innovative teams within enterprises that create new services, that drive new revenues, and help their company grow while others struggle to hold on to what will be a rapidly shrinking market-place.
Some innovations hit us seemingly over night, while others crawl up upon us like a coastal bound hurricane. The autonomous automobile is the latter, but many times, even when we see it heading straight for us, we don’t think long enough about the repercussions. We don’t pay enough attention to how it may affect us in secondary and tertiary ways until it is already being felt. We often don’t think about the wake it will likely leave behind, and how that new landscape offers opportunities that are ripe for the taking if we were to only step outside of our current boxes and ask ourselves; “What if this is bigger than we can imagine?”
When the self-driving car hits, and then permeates through society, things will never be same again. Will you be on the upside that breeds new creation, new services and innovations or the downside where existing industries will be engulfed and then forgotten with time?

21 Amazing STEM Resources You Can Use Right Now to Change the World

STEM Education Logo with colored iconsThis whole STEM problem our country faces is really eye-opening for a plethora of reasons. Want proof? See our last STEM focused post that canvassed some shocking stats on the state of STEM Ed. Ever since I became the lead on NoNameSite.com, a TopCoder initiative and on-line gaming community based on games that teach specific STEM skills and core concepts, I have learned so much. In fact, without a formal background in education, I’ve learned a ton. 
Of all that I’ve learned, the most important with regards to STEM education are the number of resources and professionals making STEM awareness and education their full time gig. Numerous dedicated teachers, organizations, corporations, etc make our national STEM problem their challenge and they are hell-bent on solving it. Through a number of programs, resources, endorsements, and websites there is bound to be a way you too can make a difference in a young person’s life. 
I’ve compiled a list of some great resources and tips for encouraging the youngsters in your life to get involved with science, technology, engineering, or math related activities. Consider it an early Holiday gift, but it’s one that you will have to act on to see that it makes an impact. It may be cliché but the truth is the youths of today are the future of our tomorrows.
Without further ado, I present 21 amazing STEM resources to share or even try out yourselves!
  1. 1. Change the Equation aims to help students in their post secondary education pursuit by focusing on widespread literacy in STEM subjects.  They have recently launched new STEM careers exploration game that all high school students should check out.

  2. 2. STEM Fuse has this great game development competition going on now; good for gamers and developers alike.

  3. 3. National Girls Collaborative Project is brimming with resources, programs and information.

  4. 4. National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) is another organization that has its own list of amazing resources.  They are working hard to balance gender diversity in technology and computing.

  5. 5. STEM Connector is the one stop shop for STEM information.

  6. 6. Alice is educational software teaching computer programming and Scratch is another great way to learn programming.

  7. 7. Maker Faire is a fun way to get kids involved with entrepreneurship and science.

  8. 8. Girls Inc is an inspirational website for girls with a number of good resources.

  9. 9. Black Girls Code is on a mission to get more girls into the digital space.

  10.   10. Best STEM toys for girls.  Think about these types of gifts this holiday season rather than the usual girly, pink stuff.  A cool toy could bring a bright future.

  11.   11. Science Buddies is a wonderful resource, offering numerous science projects and activities.

  12.   12. PBS Kids Lab has a few STEM games targeted to a younger audience.

  13.   13. Math Moves U has a number of fun games and activities.

  14.   14. US Naval Academy Summer STEM program is a great opportunity for students already excelling and who want to do more.

  15.   15. Zero Robotics is also a great program for students to program SPHERES satellites inside the International Space Station (ISS).  TopCoder is a part of this program and a great video was made to explain the program.

  16.   16. FIRST is a robotics program for students to inspire them to enter the fields of technology.

  17.   17. EdHeads offers cool games where you can do virtual surgeries and other health-science related activities.

  18.   18. Dot Diva encourages girls to enter the world computing and computer science.

  20.   20. CSEdWeek is happening right now and the amount of resources on their website is amazing.  So if you’ve not signed the pledge yet, do so!

I could probably go on for days with all the cool things that are out there for kids in the STEMosphere. But this list gives you a good start.

Even if you share just one of these references with one child it could set off a whole new adventure and life long love for technology and innovation! We know the answer to this don’t we? Your projects, your department, the things you are in charge of would come crashing down around you and you would be out of a gig… Or maybe the exact opposite would happen.
This year, at the second annual TopCoder Innovation Summit that was held in Orlando, FL, we invited the business author and award winning professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Professor Keith Murnighan, to address our audience of enterprise innovators on the aforementioned topic of “Do Nothing” leadership. His topic and talk coincided with the June release of his new business book by the same name. So what gives with this title and why in the world would a company like TopCoder, one who champions innovation and productivity & open  innovation via a global community want this type of message at our innovation summit? Like much else in life, it’s in the details and the deeper meanings of Keith’s messaging align extraordinarily well with how you can achieve great success in Open Innovation. So much so that the TopCoder Community created a gaming community named NoNameSite.com with the purpose of shepherding students between the ages of 13-18 into STEM related fields via games that truly educate. So, when we see an initiative like this one on Kickstarter, we’re glad to share the good vibrations with our audience. In short, GoldieBlox is a doll-building kit, aimed at young girls, that helps introduce them to engineering principles and spatial conceptualization. It’s being crowdfunded, it’s an entrepreneurial endeavor and it’s focused on STEM Education, so we just had to share it with you.

How Quora Founder and Ex-Facebook CTO Adam D’Angelo Became a TopCoder

Sharing knowledge. It is a foundation of the TopCoder Community. Whether it be a small peer-to-peer intra-community suggestion or the placement of industry-specific subject matter experts co-hosting an open forum and answering the community’s most specific questions; knowledge sharing begets new knowledge creation, and personal and community growth. It probably comes as no surprise to this audience that many of us internally at TopCoder find great value in the knowledge sharing community site Quora. If you have never frequented Quora, you are probably leaving knowledge on the proverbial table. It is a simple interface with a sharp focus on allowing members to ask resoundingly specific questions and then allowing subject matter experts to self-select the questions they care to answer. The cumulative result is the aforementioned sharing of knowledge, and many times over, expert knowledge is transferred.
It probably also comes as no surprise that TopCoder is “itself” a frequent topic on this Q&A site. With one quick visit to Quora and a search of TopCoder you will find a wide range of questions, many stemming from individuals looking for advice with getting going with TopCoder, or how to most rapidly achieve a certain “color” in the TopCoder rating system. It’s all rather fascinating and reading through the various answers is an exceptional way to understand how others have found success (and experienced failure!) on TopCoder. It is an extraordinarily valuable resource for our community members and we certainly appreciate it being available for all to benefit from.
One thing you may not know, but a piece of history that is rather interesting is that both Mark Zuckerberg – yes, that Mark Zuckerberg, and Facebook’s original CTO (and the founder of Quora) Adam D’Angelo were both active members of the TopCoder Community. We know, you want to know how “Zuck” performed on TopCoder… let’s just say he was extraordinarily wise to choose Adam to be Facebook’s first CTO, because Adam – when actively competing – was an exceptionally rated TopCoder.
He was recently asked how he performed so well on TopCoder and in particular, how he was able to so swiftly climb the rankings and achieve the coveted status of a Red Rated TopCoder (our highest ranking). Where did this great back and forth take place? On Quora of course!

As Cosmin points out this wasn’t that fast given my background, which at the time I started TopCoder was two years of USACO contests and their training pages. Regardless, here is what I needed to do initially:
    • Get better at parsing input quickly and accurately. In most other contests you’re handed the data in a format that’s easy to deal with, and parsing is insignificant compared to the actual implementation. In TopCoder parsing the input can require splitting strings, converting types, and watching out for tricky edge cases. These are all easy to do, but I’d never had to do them under such time pressure and with zero tolerance for mistakes before. I made a library of a few parsing functions which helped a lot at getting faster at this.

    • Learn STL. I hadn’t used STL before, and learning all the ins and outs of it like the performance of each method, how to use functors, the fact that vectors automatically double when they run out of space, etc. took some time. I remember learning the hard way that string.data() didn’t guarantee a null character on the end of the data – there were probably 10 other mistakes like that I had to make before I was really confident with STL.

    • Get better at checking edge cases. Because TopCoder programs need to pass every test case to get any credit at all, this was much more important than in the other contests I’d done. In the other contests the test cases are generally there to see how far your algorithm will go, not to try to find every possible bug. Initially this felt “cheap” to me but in the long term it definitely helped my implementation skill and I appreciate how it made me develop.

Those who frequent the TopCoder Blog know our penchant for pop-culture and our near obsession with the movie Minority Report. But the healthy obsession with the Cruise classic stems from the fact that so many of the featured innovations – from gesture-based interfaces to autonomous autos – are steadily making their way into our everyday lives. One “innovation” that probably won’t be coming to life too soon is that of the “Pre-Cogs”, the eerie human triplets who are a centerpiece of the sci-fi tale and whom have the ability to predict a serious criminal activity before it even transpires. Well, at least they won’t be taking the form of human beings who need to float in a shallow pool of what appears to be a hyper-conductive fluid in order to make such predictions. No, this will be far less Spielberg-esque… “it” instead will be an algorithm, and a really smart one at that. 

Predicting the Future via Past Sets of Big Data


There is a specific and special contest type at TopCoder called Marathon Matches. These long form algorithmic challenges are created for problems that are larger and typically more complex and because of these factors, require more time for outstanding solutions to be developed and submitted. That is the case for a very special challenge the TopCoder Community is now tackling that centers around predicting violent crime and major health emergencies in the city of Boston, MA. 
Part of the specialty in succeeding in Big Data value creation via Open Innovation – which is powered by exceptional algorithmic solutions – is the way in which you set a problem up to be digested by a community (or crowd – we at TopCoder prefer the term community – see why here). To see the level of preparation that goes into making a challenge such as this readied for competition, we invite you to view the Boston Risk Prediction Problem Statement right here. PLEASE NOTE – You WILL have to log-in to the TopCoder Arena in order to view this problem statement, but for those interested in seeing Open Innovation in action, it is worth your time. Below is a snippet from the aforementioned problem statement. 
“The aim of this contest is to produce an algorithm that can identify addresses, streets and neighborhoods in the city of Boston, Massachusetts in that are – at a given time – at risk for events of major public concern, like health emergencies or violent crime. Predictions will be based on information contained in the City of Boston’s administrative data. These data include sources that update regularly, like citations from Inspection Services (e.g. housing code violations) or public complaints, and those that are more static, like geography data or local demographic characteristics. The predictions are evaluated on different spatial and temporal resolutions. The more accurate a prediction is for time, type and location more useful it becomes for the City – and the higher the algorithm will score.”
 Also from the problem statement:
“Neighborhood characteristics have long been noted to have direct, causal impacts on individual and community health. Violence, blight, degraded infrastructure and sub-standard housing all affect a neighborhood’s ability to thrive and are therefore major public health concerns. Though the presence of such conditions strongly predicts a variety of negative health outcomes in residents, the algorithm solicited here would specify the spatial and temporal patterns that underlie these relationships. This could then inform policy measures that intend to make public services more responsive to risk factors, and more effective in preventing major health crises.”

Why Use Open Innovation to Better Solutions Born From Big Data?

This is why industries, enterprises and governments are turning to Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing to drive innovation in this era of Big Data and predictive analytics. With 14 days remaining in this Marathon Match, 33 competitors have already submitted 191 different potential solutions and as we discussed in the recent TopCoder article - What You Really Want From Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing – in the space of algorithms & analytics, you are really after extreme value outcomes and new discoveries that no other methodology could bring to light so rapidly. 
To predict the exact outcome of this Open Innovation challenge we may very well need those “Pre-Cogs”. But at TopCoder we have seen time and again that defining a challenge with exacting detail, properly exposing corresponding data sets, and then inviting in the world’s top algorithmists, data scientists, and mathematicians to compete to create the “smartest” solution is an exceptional way to succeed in creating tremendous new value from existing sets of data.

Red Hat, Xen, Java, Cloudera prepped for 64-bit ARM

The software support is needed for ARM-based servers to take off

 There's been a lot of talk from hardware vendors about 64-bit ARM servers, but without software the fledgling platform won't get very far. Several big vendors made announcements this week that show software support is on its way.
Red Hat, Oracle, Cloudera, and Citrix all announced development plans for 64-bit ARM hardware. And Linaro said it had kicked off a multi-vendor effort to develop some standards around Linux on ARM and try to avoid fragmentation, which could hinder adoption.

The announcements capped off a big week for ARM, in which Advanced Micro Devices announced it would build ARM-based server chips, and Dell showed a prototype 64-bit ARM server, using some of the first sample silicon from Applied Micro Circuits.
The software vendors joined AppliedMicro during a session at ARM's TechCon conference to announce their support for its ARMv8 architecture, which includes the 64-bit extensions. Proponents say ARM servers will be significantly more energy efficient for certain cloud and big-data analytics workloads, though there's little information about how they perform in real-world tests.
Red Hat is targeting the first half of next year for a release of Fedora, the community version of Red Hat Linux, that runs on 64-bit ARM chips, said Jon Masters, Red Hat's chief ARM architect. Fedora acts as a test bed for new features before they're added to Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Red Hat started its work a year ago and already has some Fedora code running on prototypes of AppliedMicro's 64-bit ARM chips, Masters said. The support for ARMv8 will come with a "remix" of Fedora 19, he said.
The release will include "a full LAMP stack and more," Masters said, referring to the software stack of Linux, Apache Web server, MySQL and PHP. When it adds the 64-bit support, Red Hat will stop supporting 32-bit ARM, he said.
It's not a walk in the park to port an OS to a new chip architecture, however, and Masters said the work is "very complex."
Red Hat is also part of Linaro's Linux Enterprise Group, along with Facebook, Hewlett-Packard, and others. Customers need a standard Linux platform so that they can take their software and install it on any server and know it will work, he said.
Oracle said it was working on a version of Java Standard Edition for the 64-bit ARM architecture, though it didn't give a time frame. Java SE forms the basis for Java Enterprise Edition, the version deployed with many server applications.
"I'd guess that three-quarters of all server software in the world is written in Java today," said Henrik Stalh, a senior director of product management at Oracle.
